PAPAMOA

68. BRENDA MARRIS

Brenda Marris began painting as a hobby in 2005. “I remember as a very young child colouring paper doilies with crayons. I would spend hours trying to make them look pretty. I went on to win colouring competitions in the local paper, so colour has always been an important part of my life.” Brenda initially worked in acrylics, and progressed to oils a couple of years ago, loving the texture and rich colours this medium provides. “I guess I am an emerging artist, who has taken some important learning time before exhibiting my work.” Her work is well above the standard of work that the term "emerging artist" sometimes conveys. Her use of colour and light is very impressive. Work that must be seen.

72. EMMA DAVIE

A picture to respond too, a catalyst to remember.

Taking the glimpses of memories, travel, patterns, feelings, and communicating them subconsciously onto a canvas.
Emma’s practice has evolved over the years to work intuitively, giving her audience a chance to respond to a landscape or natures form.

Pulling in natures influences, to enable the viewer to find a forgotten memory, or perhaps an imaginary place of solace.
Emma’s work emerges through brushwork, line, layering, texture, the addition and removal of paint, and use of colours to dramatise, harmonise, excite.

77. PAULA KNIGHT

Paula's work is realism with a twist and the colour turned up.
Her acrylic paintings feature the space between land and sea… the coast. Shifting shades of blue, turquoise and green, a horizon which allows the eye to drift off into the distance, open space filled with tranquil colour and a foreground to explore detail, intense colours of the featured coastal botanicals - flax, pohutukawa, cabbage trees, nikau and grasses. Paula's most recent work - colourful, vibrant and celebratory, features larger than life native birds, flowers and butterflies.
Paula teaches acrylic and watercolour painting from her Papamoa Beach studio.

78. REBECCA MATHEWS ARTIST

It wasn’t until Rebecca Mathews started painting in her 20s that she began to see the world through a macro lens. Drawn to painting realism the pursuit led her to noticing detail within the natural world. Now, blooms call to her on morning walks. Luring her in with colour, shape and interesting growth patterns.

Rebecca loves the challenge of capturing flowers on canvas. Her eye for detail enables her to encapsulate light, shadows and contours in her stunning artwork. Rebecca paints in many thin layers using watermixable oils. As a result, light bounces through each layer producing rich colours and a realistic painting.
