Information for artists
If you are an artist living in the Tauranga City Council or Western Bay of Plenty District Council areas and you'd like to be a part of this event, here's what you need to know and do:
Open Studio dates
The BOP Open Studios will run from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 February 2024, 9.30am - 4.30pm daily. Participating artists must be able to commit to being open for these hours on all three days.
Artist eligibility
Artists (painters, sculptors, printers, potters, jewellers, textile artists etc) must reside in Tauranga CC or Western Bay of Plenty DC and have a regular art practice, producing original work.
About your studio
Ideally you’ll have your own studio space that’s easily accessible to the public. However, there aren't any hard and fast rules over what is and isn’t a ‘studio’ - each artist will be responsible for creating a welcoming, safe space for visitors. That said there is an expectation the space will conform to the idea of a studio and do not foresee that group exhibition spaces/galleries will fit that bill. If in doubt, please contact us before making your application.
It is acceptable to submit an application if your studio address is yet to be confirmed - we will require this information by 1st August 2023.

Note: Maximum of two artists per studio space. The fee is per successful artist not per studio.

UNSURE OR HAVE QUESTIONS?
Please email us if you have any questions at all about the event or submission process.
Artist application and selection
We want this to be a great event for everyone. We envision a rich and diverse range of artists and makers opening their studios and an audience that is excited to connect with our region’s creative community. The selection process outlined below will help to ensure we have a superb array of artists and a marketing/PR campaign that will get everyone excited.
Our selection panellists are generously giving their time to make this happen and are drawn from our volunteer team and invited guests:
-
Moira Lomas (Ngai Tahu), artist-guest
-
Liz Cooper, curator-guest
-
Murray Clode, artist-organiser
-
Tracey Finch, artist-organiser
-
Christie Cramer, artist-organiser
What we need from you:
-
The Artist Form to be completed, including a short statement about your work/practice of 100 words or less. We will use this statement on our website and for marketing – it could be the Short Description from your Expression of Interest form.
We will also need your permission to use your work to promote the event.
-
A head and shoulders photo of yourself and three to five images of your art - all in colour. These images should be of recent work. They do not necessarily have to be the work you will have on show in your studio next February, but they should demonstrate the type of work you are likely to be showing.
Image specification: size should be a minimum of 1Mb and no more than 2Mb, in jpg or png format. Please do not submit as tif or pdf. Each image MUST be labelled with your name and unique number (e.g. John_Smith_3.jpg, John_Smith_profile.jpg)
We will notify you of the selection panel’s decision no later than 30th June 2023. You then have until 1st August 2023 to formally accept your place.

Artist fee
While it is free to apply, if you are selected and you accept your place, there is a non-refundable fee of $125.00 (per artist not per studio) which is due no later than 1st August 2023.
If you have any questions please email us bopopenstudios@gmail.com
